Pujols remains leader in NL All-Star balloting

06/22/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols remained the leading vote-getter among National League players in the latest fan balloting results for this year's All-Star Game, which will be played July 13 at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

Pujols, who overtook Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley last week for the top spot, has received 2,622,123 votes. Utley remains second with 2,409,027, and both players still have healthy leads at their respective positions. Pujols has a comfortable margin of nearly 1.5 million votes over Philadelphia's Ryan Howard, while Utley's advantage over Atlanta's Martin Prado is more than 1.2 million.

Hanley Ramirez of the Florida Marlins and the injured Jimmy Rollins of Philadelphia remain in a tight race for the starting nod at shortstop. Ramirez leads with 1,501,056 votes, while Rollins has 1,205,832. Philly's Placido Polanco saw his lead at third base over David Wright of the Mets shrink. Polanco has 1,157,196 votes, while Wright trails by just over 130,000.

St. Louis' Yadier Molina still leads all catchers with 1,322,095 votes. Atlanta's Brian McCann is next with 1,201,920 and Washington's Ivan Rodriguez has made it a three-way race with 1,084,146 votes.

The top three outfield spots remain unchanged with Milwaukee's Ryan Braun ahead of Atlanta rookie Jason Heyward and Andre Ethier of the Dodgers. Braun has received 1,816,052 votes, while Heyward is just over 29,000 behind. Ethier is just over 63,000 behind Heyward, but has a lead of more than 377,000 votes over Philadelphia's Jayson Werth for the last spot.

Fan balloting will continue through June 23 at all Major League stadiums and on all 30 club sites and at MLB.com through July 1.

All-Star teams will be announced July 4, after which time fans will select the 34th player for each league's roster in Final Vote balloting.

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.

Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.

Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.

Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.

All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
